Signing off your Assessments Before submitting your notification to the Environment Agency, you will need to have your ESOS Assessment signed off by a director or an equivalent senior manager regardless of the compliance route you’ve chosen in complying with ESOS.

For example - ESOS Energy Audits, Display Energy Certificate (DEC) reports, Green Deal assessments or an ISO50001 certified Energy Management System.

Company Cars The energy (fuel/electricity) consumption of vehicles you own or lease must be accounted for provided it is paid for by the company and consumed on company business.

Fuel/electricity consumption associated with the personal use of company-owned cars is not within scope of ESOS.

Freight Transport Energy consumption from transport is included within the scope of ESOS.

You are only required to include transport where your organisation is supplied with the fuel, not where you procure a transportation service that includes an indirect payment for the fuel consumption (e.g. train or flight ticket includes an indirect payment for the fuel consumed).

ESOS Routes to Compliance There are a number of routes which can be taken to demonstrate compliance, such as:

Audit work undertaken as part of other energy audit schemes may also be included if conducted within the compliance period e.g. Carbon Trust Standard, Logistics, Carbon Reduction Scheme, and Green Deal Fleet Reviews. You can choose to adopt a single compliance route or a number of routes but you must ensure that the selected route(s) covers all your areas of significant energy consumption.

Undertakings  will need to appoint a `Lead ESOS Assessor’ to carry out or oversee  some elements of their ESOS assessment. The role of the Lead Assessor will vary from one undertaking to the next, as in some instance they may oversee the whole of the assessment. However, as a minimum they should undertake the following:

Finding a Lead Assessor The Environment Agency has approved a number of professional bodies and each holds a register of energy professionals who are authorised to undertake ESOS energy assessments.

Measuring your total energy consumption Total energy consumption must be measured in either energy units (kWh) or in total expenditure. Total energy includes all energy used buildings, industrial process and transportation. In determining total energy consumption the following should be taken into account:

ESOS Definition of Energy consumption Includes the consumption of all forms of energy products, combustible fuels, heat (excluding participants own waste heat), renewable energy, electricity, or other forms of energy.

The following are the key steps an undertaking should undertake to comply with ESOS.
